Seismic waves are caused by the sudden movement of materials within the earth. 

Geophysicists are also responsible for examining the physical properties of rocks and gathering and evaluating well data to build reservoir models. When you go into this career your daily duties might also include, pre-plan projects before going on-site, interpreting map 2D and 3D seismic data, and more

There are three areas that geophysicists usually work in, solid earth, fluid earth, and upper atmosphere.
